Kayaba Ka-1




The Imperial Japanese Army became interested during the late 1935 in autogyro developments taking place in the USA and, believing that such an aircraft might be developed for use as an artillery spotter, imported from America in 1939 a Kellett KD-1A. However, soon after this aircraft had arrived in Japan it was irreparably damaged during a flight test and the army arranged for the wreck to be transferred to the Kayaba Industrial Company, which had been carrying out research into the autogyro configuration. Shortly afterwards Kayaba was requested to proceed with design and development of a two-seat autogyro based on the Kellett. The resulting Kayaba Ka-1 prototype comprised a fuselage with two separate open cockpits in tandem, a tail unit incorporating a tailplane with twin inverted fins, fixed tailwheel landing gear, and an Argus As 10c engine mounted conventionally in the nose of the fuselage to drive a two-blade tractor propeller; the pylon for the three-blade unpowered rotor was incorporated in the fuselage structure, mounted just forward of the front cockpit.

First flown on 26 May 1941, the Ka-1 proved successful in early flight testing, and the type was ordered into production to serve in the originally intended role as a spotter-plane for artillery units. At the same time Japanese shipping losses were beginning to rise and it was suggested that the very short takeoff required by such aircraft would make them suitable for operation from the light escort carrier Akitsu Maru. A few production Ka-1s were modified for this role and equipped to carry two 132-lb (60-kg) depth charges, but because of their limited payload capability these had to be flown as single-seaters. Operating for some time off Japanese coastal waters they were the world's first operational armed rotary-wing aircraft, with production of both versions totalling approximately 240. This number included one Ka-1 KAI which was tested with rockets attached to the rotor tips in an attempt to improve payload capability, and a single aircraft that was evaluated with a 240-hp (179-kW) Jacobs L-4MA-7 7-cylinder radial engine, allocated the designation Ka-2.

Mizuho Shinryu

The Mizuno Shinryu was a late-World War II Japanese rocket-powered suicide interceptor concept. The project never proceeded beyond the initial phase of development.

In configuration, it was to be a canard-winged design, with swept wings and tail fin. Two rocket engines were to be mounted in the rear, and the nose was to be fitted with an explosive warhead. Some versions of the design appear to have been intended to carry unguided rockets under the wings for interception of enemy bombers, similar to the intended role of the German Bachem Ba 349.

It is unclear today whether the engines were intended to provide power for take-off (like the Bachem Ba 349), or to accelerate the aircraft towards its target (like the Ohka). Similar to the Ohka, it could have been launched from coastal air bases and caves, and modified Mitsubishi G4M "Betty" or Yokosuka P1Y bombers. Its intended role, whether anti-ship, anti-aircraft, or anti-tank is still unclear.

The Mizuno Shinryu

Kugisho (Yokosuka) MXY4 (Navy Type 1 Target Plane Model11)

The Kugisho (Yokosuka) MXY4 (Navy Type 1 Target Plane Model11) was designed and built in 1940 and accepted by the IJN in 1941.  The aircraft was designed as an all wood, radio-controlled target drone for gunnery training.  The drone was powered by a 32hp four-cylinder Nihon Semi 11 box type air-cooled engine driving a 2 blade wooden propeller.  It was carried aloft by an E7K “ALF” to 3000 meters and released.  The drone had two floats under the wings for recovery.

Purpose-built kamikaze planes, as opposed to converted fighters and dive-bombers, were also being constructed. Ensign Mitsuo Ohta had suggested that piloted glider bombs, carried within range of targets by a mother plane, should be developed. The First Naval Air Technical Bureau (Kugisho), in Yokosuka, refined Ohta's idea. Yokosuka MXY7 Ohka rocket planes, launched from bombers, were first deployed in kamikaze attacks from March 1945. U.S. personnel gave them the derisive nickname "Baka Bombs" (baka is Japanese for "idiot" or "stupid"). A specially-designed propeller plane, the Nakajima Ki-115 Tsurugi, was a simple, easily-built aircraft, intended to use up existing stocks of engines, in a wooden airframe. The landing gear was non-retractable: it was jettisoned shortly after take-off for a suicide mission and then re-used on other planes. During 1945, the Japanese military began stockpiling hundreds of Tsurugi, other propeller planes, Ohkas, and suicide boats, for use against Allied forces expected to invade Japan. Few were ever used. The "Ta"-Go was Army's another purpose-built special attack plane. It was of wooden construction with a 100hp engine to carry a 100kg bomb. The first machine was assembled by students and comleted on June 25, 1945.

The original kamikaze was a typhoon that destroyed a Mongol invasion fleet in 1281. The term was revived in reference to Japanese suicide pilots who crashed planes loaded with ordnance into enemy warships starting in 1944 in the skies around the Philippines. A strictly military reason for deploying kamikaze was that the tactic could make use of trainer aircraft and outmoded “Zeros,” “Kates,” and “Vals.” That spoke to the overall inefficiency of the Japanese aircraft industry and its dramatic decay and decline in warplane production during 1944. While militarily ineffective, kamikaze addressed Japanese national morale, which was badly in decline by late 1944 but rallied to some degree around the sacrifice and symbolism of the young kamikaze. On the other hand, it is important to note that not all kamikaze were volunteers: attack squadrons were escorted by fighters ready to shoot down those who faltered, while any pilot who returned to base was imprisoned. Even among those who were volunteers, social shame and peer pressure on young men heavily conditioned their choice. Moreover, many officers in the Army and Navy air forces regarded the exercise as morally vulgar and militarily wasteful. The Navy founded its suicide wing, the “Special Attack Corps,” in 1944. The Army followed suit, founding its “Banda unit”—or the “Ten Thousand Pilots”—in October 1944. Kamikaze and Banda tactics formed part of a larger pathology of death that saturated Japan in the closing months of the war, conducing to many other types of suicide attacks, slaughtering of prisoners of war, and a pervasive fatalism and resignation about looming individual death and national defeat, all mixed with rising popular dissatisfaction with Japan’s war leaders and growing elite unease over possible rebellion.

The first kamikaze attack may have been made on October 21, 1944, against an Australian cruiser. Attacks against U.S. warships four days later during the fight at Leyte Gulf were certainly official kamikaze, and scored the first ship kill: a U.S. escort carrier. By the end of the war, 1,388 Japanese Army pilots died in suicide attacks. Thousands more naval aviators died, 4,000 or more. Few kamikaze pilots were military professionals. Most of the original group of 1,000 “tokkotai” (“special attackers”) were college students in their early 20s, drawn directly from officer candidate programs of Japan’s elite universities. Later groups were mostly lower-class boys, often as young as 16 or 17 years old, enlisted directly out of high school air cadet programs. Tactics were simple: a high, unrecoverably steep dive that targeted the enemy amidships; or a low-level, water-skimming approach that came in beneath defending anti-aircraft guns, then popped up at the last second to ram the ship while carrying a 500 lb bomb. Kamikaze attacks were often part of larger air assaults that included conventional bombing runs by pilots and air crew who fully expected, or hoped, to return to base.

The greatest kamikaze effort was made against the invasion fleet off Okinawa from April to June, 1945. Kamikaze attacks sank 38 warships, though none larger than a destroyer; they damaged nearly 200 more, while killing 4,907 U.S. sailors. The Japanese plan was to allow an initial landing, then isolate and destroy it by driving away the supporting fleet. A naval task force centered on the giant battleship IJN Yamato sailed south with only enough fuel to reach and attack the invasion fleet. Some dispute that its mission may be fairly characterized as a suicide run as the apparent intention was to beach “Yamato” and fight it out with its massive deck guns. Before that could happen the task force was met by several hundred U.S. naval aircraft and the “Yamato” and its escorts were sunk with great loss of life. About 25 percent of all enemy ships struck by kamikaze were sunk. Kamikaze hit 402 enemy warships in all, putting 375 out of action for some period of time, including 12 carriers of various type. That still left thousands of enemy warships and transports hovering around Japan’s home islands, readying to support invasion. After the surrender, Allied inspectors found over 5,000 aircraft ready for kamikaze service.

Allied countermeasures against kamikaze were highly effective. They included deploying decoy ships to steer inexperienced pilots away from major capital warships, increased anti-aircraft guns on all ships, and provision of an especially heavy Combat Air Patrol (CAP) by dozens of carriers. The CAP was maintained over the fleet at Okinawa to shoot down suicide attacks at safe distances. It also should be remembered that the vast majority of unskilled kamikaze pilots who tried to hit enemy ships instead missed and splashed, or were shot down during the attempt. The danger from kamikaze at Okinawa diverted a number of B-29 raids intended to pound Japan’s cities to instead bomb kamikaze and Banda airfields, although given the enemy’s overwhelming superiority in the air that temporary shift of the strategic bomber force hardly mattered to the outcome. Some 10,000 obsolete old trainers, along with a few new aircraft, were held in reserve for use as kamikazes pending invasions of the home islands that never took place. They were captured and destroyed after the occupation of Japan.

Nakajima Ki-62


The Ki-62 was a light fighter designed in 1941 by T Koyama to compete with the Kawasaki Ki-61. Although this design appeared to be promising, its development was discontinued to enable Nakajima to concentrate on production of their Ki-43 and Ki-44. Later, the Ki-62's data and design features were incorporated in the Ki-84 design. One 1,175 hp Kawasaki Ha-40 liquid-cooled engine. Span 12 m (39 ft 4 7/16 in); length 8.75 m (28 ft 8 1/2 in). The Ki-63 was a projected version powered by a 1,050 hp Mitsubishi Ha-102 radial.

There was never a prototype made of the Ki.62. Seems it was a "paper project" that got assigned a specific "Ki" number in anticipation of a prototype, but Nakajima gave up on it (apparently in a dispute with Kawasaki, who had a stranglehold on the engine rights to production).

Everett flight museum debuts rare WWII Zero

The Japanese plane was damaged by U.S. bombs during World War II, then recovered and restored in the 1990s.

EVERETT -- The Flying Heritage Collection's latest addition, a rare World War II Japanese Zero fighter, is scheduled for a first public flight in the skies of Snohomish County today.

The Paine Field museum's owner, Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, acquired the Mitsubishi A6M3-22 -- also known as a Zeke or Zero -- earlier this year.

The plane is scheduled to fly, weather permitting, along with an American Curtiss P-40C Tomahawk, from noon to 1 p.m. today. The event begins the museum's summer series of Saturday flights by its vintage military fighters. Free viewing areas near the museum at 3407 109th St. SW will be open. The plane will be on display at the museum after the flight.

This particular Zero was one of many Japanese combat planes partially destroyed by American bombs at Babo Airfield in New Guinea during World War II, according to museum officials. In the early 1990s, the wrecked plane was discovered and acquired by the Santa Monica Museum of Flying.

Around 1994, this Zero and two others were sent to Russia for restoration. The fighter's salvageable parts were retained, while Russian craftsmen recreated any missing or heavily damaged components to make the planes flyable again.

By the late 1990s, the trio of aircraft was back in the United States.

Early in World War II, Zeros were feared by Allied pilots for their tight turning radius and tremendous speed. Later in the war, however, Allied forces began exploiting the Zero's weaknesses, including a lack of armor. By 1943, improved American fighters had closed the performance gap, according to the museum.

Late in the war, Zeros were reduced to serving as escorts for Kamikaze (suicide) planes, or as Kamikaze weapons themselves.

Mansyu Ki-79

While manufacturing the Nakajima Ki-27 fighter under licence, in 1942, the Mansyu Hikoki Seizo KK (Manchurian Aeroplane Manufacturing Co Ltd), at Harbin, undertook the redesign of this aircraft as an advanced trainer. Designated Army Type 2 Advanced Trainer, the aircraft was built in four versions: the Ki-79a single-seat trainer powered by a 510 hp Hitachi Ha-13a; the similarly powered Ki-79b tandem two-seat trainer; the single-seat Ki-79c, powered by a Hitachi [Ha-23] 22; and the two-seat Ki-79d with a [Ha-23] 24. All powerplants were versions of the basic type. All Ki-79 variants had open cockpits, but whereas the Ki-79a and b had all-metal airframes, the Ki-79c and d were built of wood and steel.

Dive-bombers – a comparison




The Aichi D3A (Val) dive-bomber entered service in 1940. In many ways similar to the German JU-87 Stuka, it was Japan’s top naval dive-bomber of the war and the most successful Axis warplane against Allied ships. An all-metal, low-winged monoplane with fixed landing gear, it was comparable to but somewhat lighter (at 8,047 pounds) than the Douglas SBD Dauntless of the United States (see below). The D3A (1,495 produced) was capable of 240 mph and a range of 915 miles. It was armed with three machine guns and carried one 551-pound bomb under the fuselage and two 132-pound bombs under the wings. A total of 126 Vals took part in the Pearl Harbor strike. Vals served throughout the war and were used at war’s end as kamikaze aircraft.

The United States lead the field, both in doctrine and equipment. The U.S. Marine Corps first used dive-bombers in action in Nicaragua in July 1927. By 1931, the U.S. Navy’s experiments with the Curtis Hawk caught the attention of the Japanese. They ordered two He50s from the German manufacturer Heinkel for their own tests. Within the next ten years both the U.S. and the Japanese navies had developed the Douglas SBD Dauntless (U.S. Army Air Forces designation: A-24) and the Aichi D3A Type 99 Val variants, respectively, that would serve each during much of the war. During the critical carrier battles of 1942 these two types of dive-bombers accounted for 70 percent of all ships sunk.

Most dive-bombers had similar specialized features. Steep dive angles were required both to ensure accuracy and to offer the minimal exposure to antiaircraft fire. In early models, however, the angle caused the bomb to damage or destroy the plane’s propeller as it left the aircraft. Bomb displacing gear (called a “fork” or “crutch”)—first added by the United States in 1931—threw the bomb clear of the propeller. Stability was paramount for accurate dive-bombing, but the slipstream from the wings buffeted the tail; therefore, dive brakes (perforated flaps along the wings’ trailing edge) were added.

The Dauntless was the standard U.S. Navy dive-bomber in 1941. It had a top speed of 250 mph and a loaded range of 1,300 miles. Dauntless variants included the scout (with 100- and 500-pound bomb combinations) and the bomber (one 1,000-pound bomb). The Val carried one 550-pound bomb at 240 mph to a range of 1,250 miles (five hours’ endurance), and it sank more Allied ships during World War II than any other Axis aircraft. It remained in production until the end of the war. Both the Dauntless and the Val had a crew of two and were difficult to shoot down when bombless, although neither had self-sealing fuel tanks. Midway through the war both navies fielded new but unsatisfactory dive-bombers, the Curtiss SB2C Helldiver and the Yokusaka D4Y Judy, respectively.

The Helldiver replaced the Dauntless, coming to the fleet in 1943. But its structural problems required major modifications, so it deployed in large numbers only in mid-1944. The Helldiver had an internal bomb bay and flew 20 mph faster than the Dauntless, but it carried the same bomb load; however, it was much harder to fly and maintain. Overall, it did not represent much of an improvement over the Dauntless. The Judy mounted the Japanese version of the engine which powered Messerschmidt fighters. Flying at 360 mph, it was by far the world’s fastest dive-bomber. Like the Helldiver, however, it had reliability problems. It was underarmored and also lacked self-sealing fuel tanks. The Judy never completely replaced the Val, anymore than the Helldiver replaced the venerable Dauntless.

Doctrinally, dive-bombers of both navies usually worked in close coordination with torpedo bombers and in many cases with level bombers and even high-altitude bombers. Because the defensive measures that ships took against each type of attacking aircraft were different, this combined-arms approach was very effective.
